Tehran denounces US threats of force, state-sponsored unrest
TEHRAN — Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir-Saeid Iravani, has delivered an indictment of United States foreign policy, characterizing Washington’s recent actions and threats as a “deliberate and systematic assault” on international law.
Addressing a high-level Security Council debate on Tuesday, the ambassador warned that the UN Charter is being treated as an “optional menu” by a superpower that believes its strength confers a total exemption from global legal norms.
The diplomat’s remarks come at a moment of extreme regional tension, fueled by what Tehran identifies as a provocative U.S. military buildup.
In recent days, the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group has entered the region, a move that Tehran sees as a hostile show of force.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei on Monday described these deployments as “provocative violations”, asserting that the arrival of foreign fleets will not erode the “valiant will” of the Iranian people to protect their sovereignty.
During his address, Ambassador Iravani centered his criticism on the “persistent and unambiguous” threats of military intervention made by the U.S. President.
He argued that Washington is actively seeking to substitute its unilateral whims for the legitimate authority of the United Nations.
“If the United States can use threats of force, unlawful military action, coercion, and regime-change policies as routine tools without facing any consequences, what remains of the UN Charter?” Iravani asked, pointedly challenging the Security Council’s own credibility.
The ambassador also said the U.S. is inciting domestic unrest and promoting the “takeover of institutions” under the guise of political pressure.
He held the U.S. and Israel directly accountable for the “grave human cost” of these actions, specifically citing the lives of innocent Iranian civilians lost to violence between January 8 and 10—bloodshed he stated was fueled by foreign-backed terrorist groups.
Iravani concluded by stressing that no state, regardless of its power, stands above the law.
He urged the Security Council to fulfill its mandate by explicitly naming these “manifest violations” and rejecting the “misleading labels” used by Washington to bypass international jurisdiction.
